In Maysan Haydar’s “Veiled Intentions: Don’t Judge a Muslim Girl by Her Covering

April 28, 2024

In Maysan Haydar’s “Veiled Intentions: Don’t Judge a Muslim
Girl by Her Covering” the author makes an argument supporting the Muslim
practice of “covering.” For this paper, you will contextualize these arguments,
give an account of their claims, evidence, and strategies, perform an analysis
of these elements, and ultimately evaluate their relative effectiveness.
Requirements
·       MLA format
·       Works Cited Page
·       4 pages minimum
Effectively introduce the texts, their authors,
and the topic addressed in them,
Establish the rhetorical situation (contexts,
audiences, purposes, and publications),
Establish what you see as the author’s main
arguments, as well as one subordinate claim of each argument,
Demonstrate how the subordinate claims connect
back to the main argument,
Identify and analyze some of the types of evidence
the authors use to support their claims,
Explore whether such evidence allows the authors
to advance the argument and sub-claims effectively,
Identify and analyze two kinds of rhetorical
strategies that both authors use and evaluate their relative
effectiveness,
Conclude your paper by answering the questions
“What is the significance of these arguments? Why do we care about this
topic?”
Use an effective structure that carefully guides
the reader from one idea to the next, and be thoroughly edited so that
sentences are readable and appropriate for an academic audience.
I have my
introduction and conclusion paragraph already, so it would be just the body
paragraphs that I need written.
My Introduction paragraph:
The practice of modesty in Muslim dressing has sparked off
many debates and discussions worldwide. This custom is connected to people’s
religious, cultural, and personal values. The controversy over some forms of
veiling dwells on the deep expressions of religions and national cultures, the
assertion of individual rights, and the fight against communal norms. Only by
appreciating these different points of view, mentioned in different settings,
can we gain a better understanding of the various processes and purposes of
Muslim veiling. Through her article, Maysan Haydar synthesizes the diverse
dimensions that underlie the idea of Muslim covering practices. She rather
highlights personal reasons for women’s clothing, including the pursuit of
modesty and spiritual devotion, and also pays attention to the surrounding
conditions that befall making such decisions (Haydar, 2003). With this
statement, Haydar opposes the ingrained cultural attitudes towards a Muslim
woman’s decision to cover. Haydar develops this argument with real-life
accounts, using her own situation and reasons for veiling as examples. She
makes use of cultural incidents and religious evidence in order to strengthen
her own arguments. Haydar’s emphasis on real-life experiences creates a good
impression of the effectiveness of her policy and gives her views legitimacy.
Haydar employs simple and engaging anecdotes pertaining to herself and
thoughtful analysis in her work, “Veiled Intentions,” and in
this way, her arguments become stronger and more appealing to readers. While
correlating her personal narratives with cultural and faith traditions, she
rather reinforces what she is advocating for, giving a challenge to the
stereotypes presumed about Muslim female dressing behaviors. The impacts of the
article contribute to inciting empathy, understanding, and complex
conversations about veiling hence paving the way for the creation of tolerance.
My conclusion paragraph:
In conclusion, Haydar sheds light on different cultural
perceptions and stereotypes that are connected to Muslim women and their
intention to wear modest clothing. Through the use of including her own
situational impropriety and social/religious norms, she not only gives more
profound reasons behind wearing a veil but supports a knowledgeable
conversation. A key aspect of Haydar’s argument is her approach to the veiling
question from the perspective of an individual’s motives that lead to adopting
particular religious practices, such as wearing the veil. Haydar’s work helps
us appreciate the need for tolerance through different perspectives of people
as they choose the way to express their religion and culture, knowing that our
personal experiences are vital to the ability to approach diversity in an
embracing way.
