In line with the emphasis on media, both as a topic of discussion and as a major

June 26, 2024

In line with the emphasis on media, both as a topic of discussion and as a major source of material for this course, I would like you to write a reflection paper based on a film of your choice that deals with women’s—or, more broadly, gender—issues. The film should be a popular entertainment type of movie, not a documentary or media piece from this course. You will be expected to address the content of the film not only in relation to the topics covered in the course but also in terms of its implications for gender (in)equality and social work practice.
Please use the following requirements to guide you in your reflection. They will serve as the basic criteria upon which your work will be evaluated.  This paper is worth 20% of your final grade.
Film chosen for this paper is called, “Hidden Figures”
Content Requirements
Be sure that your paper adheres to the following content requirements:
Connects the contents of the film to the topics discussed in the class and readings.
Identifies and discusses how characters who identify as women are portrayed in the film and what you think of those portrayals.  If there are not characters who identify as women, discuss how these individuals are portrayed.
Identifies and discusses how the social system (family, neighborhood/community, workplace, government, societies, public policies, etc.) treats women and what you think of that treatment.
Discusses how particular situations/content/processes of the film might be re-framed to embody a more feminist and/or intersectional approach.
Discusses the broad implications of the film for gender-related issues and/or social work practice.
Exhibits a concrete argument, with references to specific images/scenes/motifs in the film.
Contains no more than a one- or two-sentence summary of the film.
Structure Requirements
Your paper should also adhere to the following requirements of structure:
Includes student’s full name, title of film, and year of film on the first page.
Is at least 1250 words long (5 pages, assuming 250 words per page).
Uses subheadings to organize the discussions.
Is coherent, logical, and free of typographical errors.
