Annotated Bibliography – Problem and Solution
Purpose of the assignment: For this assignment, you will be asked to identify a problem and propose a solution. You will locate research from a variety of sources in GALILEO and use this research to create an Annotated Bibliography. For the problem/solution argument, the problem must be something that you are familiar with and directly affects you, but is not a personal problem. You will have to be able to clearly define the problem and provide adequate proof that this problem needs to be addressed. Your solution to this problem should also be supported with evidence, and it should be realistic –  something that can be accomplished.
Purpose of the Annotated Bibliography: The final major assignment for this course requires academic research and the incorporation of sources into an analysis of the selected problem. In preparation for the formal annotated bibliography, please perform research using GALILEO to find appropriate, academic, peer-reviewed sources*. All sources listed on the Annotated Bibliography must be evaluated according to the standards set forth in your textbook. After researching your chosen topic, craft an MLA formatted annotated bibliography of a minimum of 3-4 sources. Please follow the format demonstrated on the links within this folder.
Steps to begin researching:
Decide the problem you will research.
Brainstorm key search terms for your topic.
Consider the brainstorming questions you will need to answer eventually in Essay 2.
Explore sources available on GALILEO.
Evaluate the quality of sources available on GALILEO.
Basic Guidelines:
The Annotated Bibliography is a collection of sources that could be used to answer a research question with an explanation of the source and its usefulness.
An Annotated Bibliography serves as a collection of sources has two basic parts: the citation and the annotation.
The MLA formatted citation is formed in the same way the citation is formed for the Works Cited page.
The annotation is formed in one to three paragraphs (a summary, an assessment, and reflection on the source).
The sources chosen should be on or closely related to the subject area or topic being discussed.
This is a separate assignment from essay 2, although the same topic is used for both assignments.
Remember, you are NOT writing a complete research paper at this point. This is the collection of sources you compile before writing the research paper.
For the selected problem, the research from the annotated bibliography is used in your Essay 2.
You may find additional/different sources after submitting the final draft of the annotated bibliography; these new/additional/different sources do not have to be retroactively added to the annotated bibliography, but they must be academic sources.
Rhetorical Situation:
Purpose: Problem/Solution Argument
Audience: General
Mode: Analytical/Evaluative
Evidence: 3-4 academic sources from GALILEO (articles from a scholarly journal).
Voice: Formal
Special Constraints:
3-4 sources; one to three paragraphs per source (no minimum word count)
No Works cited page
The annotated bibliography is a separate grade from Essay 2; the same sources and topic will ideally be used for both assignments.
Required Sources (3-4): Academic journal articles from GALILEO
Final draft should be submitted in MLA format to the dropbox before the due date; TNR or Arial, 12.
