April 29, 2024

In an interview with Vulture writer Bilge Ebiri, the author suggest that Coppola was “back” with Tucker, The Godfather Part III, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula in the late 1980s/early 1990s after a period of artistic stagnancy.  Coppola responded:
“I have never, in my entire career, been “back.” I’ve always been doing weird, stupid things and following my heart. It made no sense to handle my career the way I did, but I wouldn’t do it another way.”
Do you agree with Ebiri that Coppola was “back”?  And/Or do you agree with Coppola that he has never been “back”? Come up with a thesis that engages with the notion of being “back” by focusing on three films from three different periods of Coppola’s career.  Choose one film from each of the following periods:
1) One from the Heart, The Outsiders, OR Rumble Fish
2) Tucker: A Man and His Dream, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, OR The Godfather Part III
3) Youth Without Youth (2007), Tetro (2009), OR Twixt (2012)
Your essay should one again focus on Coppola as he navigates his way through the art and business of Hollywood from 1980 to the present.  Make sure to have a clear and concise thesis around these issues.
****This essay should neither be a thematic analysis of Coppola’s films nor a comparison of Coppola to any of the characters in his films. In other words, you should not say how Coppola’s characters took risks themselves or have been “back” in any kind of way.****
This is a critical essay, one that focuses on a thesis and argument by adhering to logical reasoning and offering supporting evidence. You should also ground your answer in industry, aesthetics, and culture which lie at the heart of the course lectures and readings.
Requirements: Your paper must be in 12 pt. Times New Roman, double-spaced, one-inch margins all-around, and 1500 words long (100 word buffer on each side, so between 1400-1600 words only).  Your paper should include a minimum of six different sources: at least three from the readings in class and three outside sources.  Make sure to avoid long quotes in your paper and to include a consistent citations system and bibliography.  Please list your word count on the top of your exam.  Remember, your essay title and bibliography is not part of the required word count.  Once again, IMDB and Wikipedia are off limits.  Documentaries, interviews, and commentaries are not.
****This essay should NOT be a thematic analysis of Coppola’s films nor a comparison of Coppola to any of the characters in his films. In other words, you should not say how Coppola’s characters took risks themselves or have been “back” in any kind of way.****
**Please be percise in your citings**
