The major theme of our course this spring has been the idea that the maps of meaning we use to make sense of the world are not wholly authored by individuals — they are socially constructed, constantly, by everyone. We create these understandings together, teach them to each other, and continue debating & refining them.
With that in mind, pick two texts from the assigned readings that you think illuminate this idea in the clearest, most interesting, and/or most important ways. In a well-organized, 300-word response, describe specifically how the concepts in these two readings revealed particular dimensions, mechanisms, or aspects of communication as a social construction that were new for you or that changed your perception of how communication & media work. Provide at least one specific example of mediated communication from your own life that illustrates your thinking.
