In a paper of 1,000 words, you must successfully synthesize and analyze a passage from the text.
This passage can be of your choice! If you prefer help in this area, I have provided two options
for you to choose from. If you do not have for any of these options, you are more than welcome
to choose a passage of your own, subject to approval. If you are not using on the of the
provided passages, you must email me your selection by 11:59pm CST on Sunday, April
28th
.
Your paper must be an exercise in close reading and must do the following three things:
1. Literal level: describe what is literally happening in the chosen passage. Who is
speaking? At what point in the plot is this taking place? Where are the characters during
this scene? Etc.
2. Literary level: analyze the passage for the literary meaning. This means paying close
attention to language and imagery. What words were chosen and why? What images?
What figures of speech? Can you identify a pattern or mood created by word choice
and/or imagery?
3. Connect part to whole: How does your passage relate to a thematic at work in the book as
a whole? Why is your piece important to our understanding of the larger work?
Due date: Sunday, May 5
th at 11:59pm CDT
Paper will be submitted via a Turnitin.com portal on Moodle.

Option 1:
“At last the curtain began to move. Who could be behind it—some naked savage queen, a
languishing Oriental beauty, or a nineteenth-century young lady, drinking afternoon tea? I had
not the slightest idea, and should not have been astonished at seeing any of the three. I was
getting beyond astonishment. The curtain agitated itself a little, then suddenly between its folds
there appeared a most beautiful white hand (white as snow), and with long tapering fingers,
ending in the pinkest nails. The hand grasped the curtain, and drew it aside, and as it did so I
heard a voice, I think the softest and yet most silvery voice I ever heard. It reminded me of the
murmur of a brook” (143). DO NOT USE ANY A.I. PLEASE USE THIS PASSAGE AS WELL
