Christina’s Post:
Sometimes the simplest solution is the most effective. Communication is a major factor during surgery. The door does not need to be opened to communicate. Communication can be done via telephone, a simple type of technology. Using technology is effective to reduce the need for door openings, “… telephones to contact others instead of face-to-face conversations” (Shahroundi & Aarabi, 2021). In a study by Teter et al (2017), “observed numerous instances of verbal communication and equipment movement” as the main causes of door openings during surgery. The study went on to note that doors were opened for avoidable reasons such as “… verbal communication for status updates, clinical discussion, or other social visits” (Teter et al. 2017). The study goes on to suggest the use of technology to combat many unnecessary openings, “Health care institutions have implemented technology to allow communication between providers so that they do not need to go in and out of patient rooms as often” (Teter et al. 2017). I plan to implement telephone use for communication. For example, calling the charge nurse to update on case status. During the education session, I will give rationale for use of telephone communication.
