Self-awareness is a huge part of emotional intelligence because having an ability to understand own emotions and their impact on work and others can improve performance and professional relationships (Apore, Asamoah, 2019). Emotions matter extremely for effective leadership. Leaders have to be able to manage their own emotions if faced with emergent situation needing their leadership. Emotional intelligence helps them keep their focus and think clearly under pressure. Emotional intelligence is an ability of a person to identify and manage their own emotions, as well as understand what motivates others and how to effectively work with them (Steinberg, 2019).
Workplace with emotionally intelligent leaders tends to be a productive workplace where its easily collaborate between teammates, they feel comfortable speaking up and sharing their thoughts. Some of the behaviors emotionally intelligent leader has include being able to relate to colleagues, motivate them, effectively resolve conflict and inspire others to improve work field (Steinberg, 2019). For example, a charge nurse has a different lifestyle views from her coworkers but can look past it while on the job, to work together towards quality patient care. She provides her colleagues with support, advices, appraises or constructive criticism when applicable.
