Jennifer’s Post:
The healthcare industry is becoming increasingly complex, reaching higher standards than ever, and the definition of quality patient care and safety is being re-shaped and perfected. Today the majority of the inter-professional medical team, from social workers and pharmacists to physical therapists already have a minimum bachelor’s degree. So it is a natural progression to have more BSN-prepared nurses in the field.
Nurses are trained at the Baccalaureate level in critical thinking skills that positions them to contribute to health policy initiatives, and to a stronger health care delivery system through patient advocacy. Masters level students train to be clinical nurse leaders with expertise in areas that are critical to the implementation of the ACA 2010. The DNP- prepared nurse is trained in translational research, provide evidence-based care, quality improvement, and systematic leadership (Cleveland JD, MSN, RN et al., 2019). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) also stands behind the BSN as the necessary level of preparation for nurses. The AACN believes that a BSN provides nurses with the skills required for critical thinking, leadership, case management, and health promotion. Research has shown a correlation between BSN-prepared nurses and improved patient outcomes (UNCW, 2019).
In a study published in February 2015 in the Journal of Nursing Education and Practice, April Matthias found that an RN’s education positively correlated with improved patient outcomes in her research. Research is building the case for more highly educated nurses to accommodate the change in patient needs and the demand for preventive care (Iowa Nurse Foundation, 2018).
I agree with this research, it is the fact that advanced degrees in nursing are necessary for the nurse to update current trends and advances in patient care. In the real scenario, a nurse working in the cardiac unit notices medication error i.e. drug ordered is above the desired dose, and questions the drug dose error. As evidence-based practices requirements and to conduct research were increasing to provide outcome-based care, patient safety is preventing harm for hospitalized patients such as preventing nosocomial infection, pressure ulcer, patient fall, medication errors. Care is extended to meet the needs of the patient and families. This nursing knowledge and skills are required to sustain quality care through advanced degree nurses.
