Carole’s Post:

The five elements of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. While each are an important part of emotional intelligence many believe that the most important is these elements. Self-awareness is the ability to control emotions and impulses.

Great leaders are often noted to be people that don’t allow themselves to become too angry or jealous, and they don’t make impulsive or careless decisions. According to industry experts, emotional intelligence (EQ) describes one’s ability to identify and manage their own emotions, as well as empathize with and manage others’ emotions as well. (Steinberg,2019). Scholars note that there is far more to being successful than high levels of cognitive intelligence. And that emotional intelligence is twice as important as cognitive intelligence for predicting career success and that far too much emphasis is placed on traditional predictors of employee performance.

High levels of emotional intelligence improve working relationships, help to develop problem solving skills, increase effectiveness and efficiency, and help to develop new strategies.
The nature of the nursing profession itself, aimed at health promotion, disease prevention and care of physically and mentally ill and disabled people of any age, requires nurses to be emotionally intelligent in order to respond to their multifarious duties. (Prezerakos, 2018).

Nurses are noted to have the ability to identify, assess and control one’s own emotions, the emotions of others and of groups. They are thought to be comfortable with their own thoughts and emotions and understand how they can impact others. By understanding and accepting the way you feel can lead to the first step of overcoming it. Self-awareness is also about knowing your strengths and weaknesses and what is important to you, including your values and morals. It is also how we gather information and how we handle ambiguous and stressful situations and how we are perceived by and interact with others. And is an indispensable asset in leading organizations.

An example of not being self-awareness is noting that someone can face the same obstacles repeatedly and cannot understand why this keeps happening. But when you become self-aware you can examine the reason this keeps happening and are able to find a solution to get to the root of the problem. A self-aware person is better equipped to deal with the obstacles and find the solution. Developing self-awareness as a leader is often the first step in developing emotional intelligence. They are constantly looking at ways to improve.
