Christopher R. Teeple

I’m working on a social science question and need a sample draft to help me understand better. In this course we have discussed topics and themes ranging from history to law and public policies associated to marginalized youth in American public education experience in the United States as well as groups of people going through a similar situation, in Brazil.

We have looked at schools and their ability to “connect” youth to their educational experiences, and we have also discussed the “institutional failure” some youth experience as they are “pushed out” of school. We have also discussed the historical and political process for institutionalizing the American public education system with zero tolerance policies in public schools, which eventually leads to the creation, and expansion of, the school to prison pipeline.

Finally, we engaged readings that also suggested how to create more equitable learning environments, as a result, more equitable communities, etc. For this assignment I would like you to use course readings, discussions, videos / films, to formulate your own academic interpretations of course material to help you write your final paper. Please follow the instructions below for additional information on formatting your paper before submission. PROMPT For this paper answer the prompt below and take the course text readings from class to write your paper.

You are to also find at least 5 additional research resources. I am encouraging you to take the evidence, and discussions, presented in class and make your own paper out of it. As such, please make sure to use qualified resources for your paper. If you need assistance with finding resources please make sure to visit the UCSB Library website: (https://www.library.ucsb.edu/) and click on the “Research” tab. You will be given a number of selections to choose from to conduct your research.

There is also a short video on how to search for journals, created by your TA, Jessica Hai. You are to specifically address the following: According to our class discussions and course readings and lectures, how does institutional failure persist in the American public-school system today? Is it overt (out in the open), or covert (hidden), in how it operates? For example, institutional failure, as we discussed in class is when our public institutions fail to provide services, care and necessary resources to their people. The argument in class is that poor people, particularly poor people of color face institutional racism as a result of those institutions’ failing to meet equitable standards for all their citizens. In the case of our class we are looking at schools as our main institutions for analysis, but as budding researchers, I also urge you to seek other community institutions to show how some people assist / desist, invest / divest, oppress / empower, etc. their students. Freire can be helpful here, but as we finish class, Morris and Gloria Ladson- Billings will also offer options for you to consider for the second part of your paper. Moving forward, for the second part to your paper, I want you to focus on the solution side of our class discussions. Use the following as “guiding questions”; intended to assist you work through the “solutions” for your final paper.

Think about how we can better serve our public-school youth in the US; what do social scientists / educators, like Drs. Gloria Ladson- Billings and Monique Morris, Pedro Noguera, etc., suggest could be helpful? I want you to consider Dr. Ladson- Billings’ vision for a “modern model for public education”; would your model be similar, or different, to Dr. Ladson- Billings? How so? Please explain. Additionally, given the current pandemic and the changes and effects it has had on our socio-political, economic, and public health, what do our authors suggest for new changes in public schools moving forward in a post-COVID19 era? Do you think that this pandemic will push more people to create more equitable solutions? How so? Has taking this course changed your perspective on how socio-emotional attachment works, and looks like, for different children in American public schools? How do you think that socio-emotional attachment with education look like post-COVID19?

Please be thorough in your answers. Do not assume we know what you are intending to say. This is an opportunity for you to use class, your personal experiences and external resources, to create an argument for how you see today’s American public- school system for young Americans, and what can be done to help make their educational experiences better. As you write your final paper remember to give proper context and provide adequate research / data resources to supplement your argument/s. Formatting:

 12- point font, Times New Roman  Double-spaced; 1” margins, all around  Must include a “references” or “bibliography” page at the end of paper  Citation format: MLA (Purdue OWL)  Must be at least 2000 words (8+ pages). Please include word count on at the bottom of the title page.
