I’m working on a news media case study and need support to help me understand better.CASE STUDY: world environment dayWorld Environment Day is the United Nation’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.
It is the ‘people’s day’ for doing something to take care of the Earth. That ‘something’ can be focused locally, nationally or globally; it can be a solo action or involve a crowd. Everyone is free to choose. World Environment Day will be held on 5 June 2021, and the theme is beating single-use plastic pollution. Plastic is everywhere. From our beaches in Australia to the remote Arctic, it’s silently choking our planet and wildlife. It has contaminated the soil, rivers and oceans. It’s even entered our food chain.
Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations. That’s the equivalent of setting five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world. Plastics often contain additives making them stronger, more flexible, and durable. But many of these additives can extend the life of products if they become litter, with some estimates ranging to at least 400 years to break down. Small decisions like choosing a plastic free product, using reusable bags, recycling scraps of plastic or saying no to disposable plastic can make a huge difference for the future of our planet. So join the campaign… #BeatPlasticPollution.
