Instructions for the Annotated Bibliography
Finding relevant secondary sources, evaluating these
sources, and documenting these sources properly are important aspects of
literary research.  This assignment is
designed to help you practice these skills.
It is also designed to help you gain a deeper understanding of your topic
by focusing particularly on what the critics are claiming.
Follow these steps in
preparing your annotated bibliography:
Read the articles you are using as the basis for
your research project as many times and as closely as possible in order to
gain a good understanding of the topic.
Using databases, criticism-based reference books,
and literary journals, find
contextual material and critical material for the article that you have
chosen.  The critical material
should be from peer-reviewed scholarly
journals.  You must have 3
contextual and 3 critical articles.
Read and evaluate the sources you have found and
pick three articles that provide the most relevant background / contextual
material for your work and three articles that make interesting claims
about the literary work.  Make
photocopies of or print the six sources that you have selected.
For each
source that you have chosen, write a one-page annotated bibliography entry.  This means that you will do the
following:
begin by providing a citation in the correct
format (MLA)
summarize the main points made in the article
(one paragraph summary)
explain why you have chosen this particular
article as an essential source for understanding the topic under study.
(one paragraph reflection)
The complete annotated bibliography should be 6
pages in length (one page per
source).
Use 12 pt Times New Roman and 1 inch margins of
four sides of the page
Use proper MLA format
