Speech Analysis
In order to understand the dynamics of presenting, it is helpful to analyze speeches to review what went well and what could be improved, and then apply to your own presentations.
For this assignment, you will find a specific speech of your choice and then evaluate the speaker’s effectiveness in nonverbal and verbal cues, presentation skills, content, cultural competence (using communication styles to overcome cultural barriers), and speaker credibility. You will identify the strategies of effective presentation in your review.
Go to TED Talks, American Rhetoric, or the Library of Congress and search for a speech with a topic or speaker of your interest. The speech will need to be video as well as audio, so you can analyze the nonverbal elements along with the content.
After watching the speech, reflect on it by answering the following questions below. Please use the Unit 3 Assignment Template to for your submission.
Identify the speech and URL.
Briefly describe your first impression of the speaker and content.
Identify the topic and purpose of the speech. Is the thesis clear or is there some ambiguity?
Explain how the speech functions to transmit, reinforce, restore and/or transform culture.
Identify the mode of delivery that was used — memorized, manuscriipt, impromptu, or extemporaneous.
Which of the five canons of rhetoric were effective? Describe at least one canon that needed to be improved.
