Homework Assignment 1 – Case Study 1.3
In the Welsh and Harris textbook please answer the questions provided on pages 80 and 81 [Questions 1 and 2 and all subparts]. Please number your answers accordingly as they are in the book and provided below. Your responses should be
reflective of what you read and understand, but written in your own words. Therefore don’t abuse direct quotations. Also use college level writing and proof read your submissions before submitting it. I am grading this on your ability to apply what you’ve read and assessing the questions asked and conveying your thoughts in your own words. Do not upload your submissions, in other words type your responses directly into the answer box.
1.3 Case Study is called: Incorporating Restorative Justice and Community Justice into American Sentencing and Corrections. It should start on page 68 – 81 at the end of Chapter 1.
Describe how the case study illustrates the five basic steps of criminal justice systems assessments.
Give one example of each of the following steps:
Mapping the system
Documenting and assessing current policy and practice.
Gathering information on the offender population.
Identifying sanctions, services, and programs.
Identifying community recourses.
Assume now that the following hypothetical circumstances occur: The Governor makes an announcement that restorative and community justice is about to become the preferred practice in your state. The Governor states that a new law will require all counties/parishes within the state to reduce the number of their court commitments to state prison by 50 % within two years [reduce the number of folks they send to prison from court/sentencing]. There will be substantial financial incentives for compliance and substantial financial penalties for noncompliance. Assume you have been assigned to a county planning committee that has been asked to respond to this change in law.
Now, using force field analysis, do the following:
Identify “driving forces” and “restraining forces.” Try to identify at least two of each.
Analyze one of the restraining forces in part (a) in terms of its amenability, potency, and consistency.
Describe two possible strategies to reduce this source of resistance.
