Identify an area of civil liberties afforded to Americans today not previously afforded

June 7, 2022
Christopher R. Teeple

Instructions
Civil liberties refer to the individual freedoms and legal protections afforded American citizens, protecting them from the government. These include freedoms and protections like due process of law and the right to free speech. Civil rights, by contrast, refer to legal protections or public policies concerning equal treatment in American society. Civil rights prohibit discrimination under the law on the basis of race, gender, disability status, or other demographic characteristics. While both civil rights and civil liberties occupy important places in American politics, they evolved along fundamentally different paths.

Explain how the civil rights and civil liberties afforded Americans have evolved since the founding of the United States. Assess the status of civil rights and liberties afforded Americans today. Have we achieved the goals expressed by the Constitution? You must include a specific example upon which you will build your position. I.e., Women’s rights, legalizing cannabis in select states, same-sex marriage, gun control laws, etc.

You will create a PowerPoint presentation which will address/include the following items:

Identify an area of civil liberties afforded to Americans today not previously afforded,
Explain the previous opposition to civil liberty for your selected topic,
Identify and explain the current laws used to support the civil liberty,
Discuss your support or opposition for the identified civil liberty
Include information regarding public opinion and the way it shaped lawmakers’ viewpoint(s) on the civil liberty,
Consider and discuss the long-term psychological impact of the changes to the moral fabric of American society
