Critical Moments in History: The Remix Version
Technical Requirements:
You will be required to complete a 6-7 page paper for your final. The paper is to be in 12 point font, doubled spaced, with 1 inch margins, contain a title, in text citations that conform to MLA, APA, or Chicago Style citations and a bibliography or work cited page.
The first part of your paper needs to follow the conventions of an academic research paper. This means you need a thesis statement or argument that is housed in your introductory paragraph. Your thesis will argue a standpoint and guide the reader into your paper. This is not an informative paper, your not telling me something about history without purpose.
The introduction will be followed by paragraphs that will contain evidence drawn from OpenStax, Zinn Reader and the Modules. You will present your evidence (with proper citations) and analyze the significance of the evidence as it pertains to your argument. There needs to be 3 significant “pieces” of evidence that is broken down into separate paragraphs. This does not mean that I am asking for a 5 paragraph essay.
You will have a paragraph that discusses the historical legacy of the people, events, or ideas that you wrote about. How is this significant today?
A conclusion closes off the paper and restates the significance of your argument.
Paper Prompt
Part 1 (Worth 75 points)
Your paper requires you to complete two parts that total 6-7 pages. In class, we learned that a story has a beginning, middle and end and that there are critical turning points in history that shape our contemporary reality. Please identify 3 people, events or ideas that has critically shaped the course of colonial history from 1400s-1877. This section should take up 4 pages of your paper.
Part 2 (Worth 25 points)
As we have learned, history is the story about us–where we have been, where we are presently and where we will go. I have used music and media clips to demonstrate ideas and concepts. We have learned that music has been critical to slave culture as a means to survive and also resist. Hip Hop has come from that tradition of being political and expressing the concerns, joy, discontent and hopes of a community. In this second part, I want you to think about your life and how you will be remembered in the form of a “mixed tape” or if your life were an album, what songs would be on it?
Select at least 3 songs to form a beginning, middle and future in order to illustrate who you are. I want you to use the lyrics as evidence to demonstrate who you are–where you have been and where you want to go. This part should be at least 2-3 pages (you can go longer).
identify 3 people, events or ideas that has critically shaped the course of colonial history from 1400s-1877.
