Coronavirus Pandemic Case Study Analysis
In this activity, participants will perform a case study analysis of education during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Reflect on the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on Middle/High school student attendance, special education and student social emotional learning. From a leadership perspective, in particular, analyze the issues that leaders at the various levels had to make and the outcomes, or effects, of those decisions.
Participants will present their case study analysis in one of the following formats, (1) written paper, (2) written presentation (PowerPoint or similar tool), or (3) video presentation.
The case study analysis should include these sections:
1. Introduction
o Identify 3-5 key problems/issues/decisions that confronted leaders in education during the Coronavirus pandemic
2. Background
o Set the scene: background information, relevant facts and details pertaining to the key problems/issues/decisions
3. Alternatives and Options
o Outline and analyze possible alternatives and options (not necessarily all of them) to the key problems/issues/decisions that confronted leaders
o Pros and cons of each
o Constraints and reasons for constraints of each
4. Decision Analysis
o Analyze the decision made on each of the 3-5 key problems/issues that confronted leaders
o Explain why you think this solution was chosen
o Explain the effects of the decision on various stakeholders
o Was the decision the “right” decision? Why/why not? Explain your thinking. If not, what could have been a “better” decision?
5. Next Steps
o For each of the 3-5 key problems/issues/decisions that confronted leaders, consider any future considerations that may come about. For example:
1. Will each problem/issue/decision need to be reconsidered when things return to “normal”?
2. Should the decision, either in full or part, made on each issue/problem stand even when things return to “normal”?
6. Summary
o What are the general “key takeaways” and “lessons learned” for leaders in the field of education as a result of the pandemic?
o What are the “key takeaways” and “lessons learned” for leaders pertaining to each of the key problems/issues/decisions analyzed in this case study?
o Any general concluding thoughts on educational leadership during the pandemic
