Note: The movie is in English but is subtitled in Spanish. Because some people in the ZOOM meeting requested it, I added a 6th choice that is a creative option.
Choose one of the following number to respond to in essay form (introduction with thesis, support/body, conclusion, which means the essay should have at least three paragraphs). The essay can be as long or as short as you want, meaning there is no word length. You have ways to contact me if you have any problems with meeting the deadline, but I need a few days to look at all the exams. Just send it to me by email as usual. There are no right or wrong responses, only arguments you can or cannot justify by referring to the text or the film.
1. In the play, immigration plays a strong role. What does the play suggest about the Chicanas (Mexican Americans) working in Estella’s shop as far as their attitudes towards being immigrants and how can you tell?
2. Is Carmen someone you would consider a “good” mother? (You can use the text, the film, or both to respond to this.) Why (or why not) do you think so?
3. The play makes some interesting points about generation gaps. What is the generation gap that exists between Carmen and each of her two daughters?
4. Economic inequality is subtly (quietly) addressed in the text and the film. How is it shown in either the text, the film or both?
5. Compare and contrast the film and the text of the play. How are they similar? How are they different?
6. Creative option: Obviously, to Ana, education is very important. Think of Ana in the present, as someone who has graduated from college (perhaps even has advanced degrees) talking to her daughter, who is in high school, deciding whether or not to go to college, and where (should she stay at home or leave to find a college in another city). You are writing a monologue from Ana to her daughter. You must use Anna’s voice. What advice does Anna give her daughter and why?
