Instructions:
Objective:
The Analytical Research Paper
is designed to test the research and analysis you have done on your topic/question,
putting your stance to the test and challenge your ability to write in an
academic tone/voice, provide evidence and claims, integrate sources, and
explore your issue and stance on the page.
Getting Started:
●
Using the
research and analysis you have completed in your WP2: Annotated Bibliography,
you will explore the topic/question from your research proposal (WP2
Prewriting) and work toward a stance
on the topic that you’ve developed through your research and our thesis workshop.
●
You will have a thesis that is informed by your stance on the topic and provides the
reader with a direction that the paper is headed toward.
●
Throughout the
paper you will demonstrate the ability to comprehend
and analyze the central arguments of the topic you have chosen.
●
You will provide
some (2-3 mentions) historical and
social context on your topic.
●
You will make
several complex connections between evidence
and claims to direct the reader
toward your stance/feeling on the topic.
●
You will adhere
to the tonal and formal conventions
of an academic essay.
●
You will use a minimum of four sources in your paper. In-text citation, summarization, and
paraphrasing should all be used. Correctly use these in a MLA Work Cited list
format at the end of your paper.
Completing the Assignment:

Introduction This should provide a
compelling opening to explaining your topic and give shape to the ideas that
your thesis will develop.
·
Thesis This should give the
readers a sense of the topic focus and the central stance/argument of your
paper.
·
Body
Paragraphs containing:
o Claims The claims you make in your paper should be
directing the reader toward ways of understanding the topic in relation to your
stance. Topic sentences, transitions, and
directional language should be used to help make your claims.
o Evidence each claim should be supported by evidence that has
been researched and analyzed.
§ You will use in-text citation, summarization, and
paraphrasing to integrate your research (evidence) into the text of your
paper.
§ The connection between
evidence and claims should be apparent, but the reader should be able to
distinguish your ideas from your sources ideas.
o Transitions these help your paragraphs progress logically,
helping the reader connect and understand from one point to the next

Conclusion Your conclusion should
re-iterate or challenge your thesis and connect to the ideas presented in your
introduction. This conclusion should also give the reader a sense of the
lasting impact of your topic and stance.

Your paper should
be double-spaced, typed in 12-point font, and set to 1” margins.
