Once of the competencies for English 10 is: Use feedback obtained through peer review, instructor comments, and/or other sources to revise writing.
All of the writing assignments in this class were designed the the final essay in mind, and I have provided extensive feedback for growth (and revision) on each assignment. You are encouraged to use revised paragraphs written in the class to use in this essay.

Assignment:
STEP 1: Write a prescriptive essay that addresses the issue: Should Judge Aaron Persky have been recalled for his sentencing of Brock Turner ?
In order to construct this essay, you need to address the following descriptive issues:
1. Was Persky guilty of judicial misconduct? (Was he biased? Did he abuse his authority? etc.)
2. Was the sentence given by Persky sufficient? Did it accomplish what you think a sentence should accomplish?
make sure that that the perpetrator will not re-offend.
make the perpetrator sorry for what he/she has done.
isolate criminals keep society safe from a threat
serve as a deterrent or warning to potential offenders
provide justice for the victim
3. Was the recall good or bad for society?
STEP 2: Select the outline option that blends your conclusions for the selected questions. Use that outline to structure your essay.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ESSAY
• The essay must be approximately 2000 words. It cannot be shorter than 1800 or longer than 2600. The Title page and References page do not count in the total words.
• The essay must be typed and documented according to APA format. Documentation includes a separate title page, parenthetical citations and separate References page. (Remember there is a typing template for APA format in the module).
• The essay must contain information five sources to seven sources (ONE of which must come from 2022-2023 and ONE you must have found through independent research). This means that you must use your research skills to find and use at lease one source that was not assigned, linked and/or referenced in the Canvas modules. Students may use more than seven sources if they wish. Information from Wikipedia can only be used in the introduction and will not count toward your used sources.
• Each body paragraph must contain at least one pieceof relevant and accurate evidence. The use of quotations or paraphrases in the introduction and conclusion is optional. Evidence must be reported in the form of quotation and/or paraphrase; both paraphrases and quotations must be used. (Summaries cannot be used in this essay). Note: Any passage of 40 or more words must be paraphrased. Do not use block quotations.
All evidence must be introduced with an author tag and end with a parenthetical citation. (Students who bold all Quotations and underline all paraphrases will earn 2 extra credit points.)
Essays must not include misinformation. Check your facts!
ESSAYS THAT DO NOT MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS WILL EARN AN IMMEDIATE 60% in the CONTENT CATEGORY.
THE ESSAY SHOULD:
1. Be focused. Every sentence in the essay should serve a clear, distinct purpose.
2. Take into consideration Turner’s complete sentence, not just his time in county jail.
3. Have an introduction that gets the reader’s attention, sets the context for the argument (spells out Turner’s complete sentence) , convinces the reader that the issue is important, and presents your bottom line .(conclusion/thesis).
4. Have a body that is more than one body paragraph that defends the bottom line and that accounts for 80% of the total words. Students may use all confirmation paragraphs, all refutation paragraphs, or a combination of confirmation and refutation paragraphs.
5. Have confirmation paragraphs organized around supporting reasons that state your criterion and are written using the S-E-E pattern of development and/or refutation paragraphs using the P-I-E-D pattern of development. (If you have written paragraphs earlier this semester that are appropriate, you may reuse them.) Summation paragraphs will be organized around the R-R-R pattern discussed in class.
6. Avoid being GLIB. Evidence and the explanations of the significance of that evidence is extremely important.
7. Should not contain the following errors: fragments, fused sentences, rogue capital letters, rogue apostrophes or spelling errors that would be caught by spell check. All proper nouns and the pronoun I must be capitalized. People should be referred to by their full names or their last names, but not their first names (unless the first name is used in a quotation).
When planning the essay, consult the OPTIONS linked here. As you are writing, consult the grading rubric below.
This assignment will be automatically checked for plagiarism using Turnitin.com. If you don’t know how to read your result, send me an e-mail and I’ll explain. Remember any instance of plagiarism will result in a 0 for this assignment. There will be no opportunity to rewrite an essay containing plagiarism.
THE ESSAY WRITTEN AND SUBMITTED IN THIS PORTAL WILL BE EVALUATED FOR ORGANIZATION, CONTENT, AND RHETORICAL APPEAL. You will submit the essay again in the second assignment portal where it will be evaluated for FORMATTING, DOCUMENTATION, REPORTING OF INFORMATION, AND DICTION and GRAMMAR.
A Revision Checklist for the Final Essay
1. Is the title created as follows: Topic of paper: Hint as to your conclusion?
2. Is the paper typed according to APA format (which includes a title page and
References page)?
3. Do all of the sources listed on the References page appear in the essay itself and
all of the references used in essay appear on the References page?
4. Are a minimum of 5 sources listed on the References page? Is one of those
sources from 2022-2023? Was one of those sources found through independent
research?
5. Is the essay at least 1800 words (without the Title page and the References
page)? Is the essay under 2600 words? (Note: It is just as important not to go
over word limit as it is not to fall under.)
6. Is the essay free of plagiarism?
7. Does the introduction detail both the situation and the sentence?
8. Does the thesis state the conclusion? Does the conclusion directly answer the
question expressed as the issue?
9. Does each body paragraph begin with a discussion point that is a claim that
must be supported?
10. Does each body paragraph use at least one piece of RELEVANT evidence?
(Keep in mind, more evidence is better, but not if the evidence is not relevant.)
11. Is each piece of evidence explained using the following pattern (all three parts
must be there):
a) Identify and define the criterion (eg. Deterring others from committing the
same crime means that the sentence ensures that other young men will shy
away from making the decisions that Brock Turner made.)
b) Explain how/why the evidence illustrates that criterion (eg. . If Turner had
been put into prison for 6 years, Brock Turner would have been forgotten, but
because of the light jail time, his case is a real life morality tale. Young men
can see that a series of bad decisions, one of which was drinking to the point
of inebriation, cost him everything, and because of the constant media
attention, they will continue to receive this message.
c) Tie the explanation back to the conclusion: Turner is able to serve as a
warning to young men everywhere as a result of his light sentence; therefore,
his sentence was appropriate.
12. Is each piece of evidence properly quoted or paraphrased? (This is a
competency and an important part of the grading rubric. I am not forgiving here.)
a) Does each piece of evidence begin with an author tag?
b) Does each piece of evidence end with a paragraph number in the citation?
c) Are the author’s credentials included in the author tag (this is needed to
create ethos)?
d) When quoting, if you left anything out of the original passage, did you signal
the omission with ellipsis marks?
e) When quoting, if you made any changes to the original passage, did you
signal the change using brackets?
f) When paraphrasing were you careful to use your own words and sentence
structure?
g) When paraphrasing were you careful to keep the original tone and meaning
even though you used your words and sentence structure?
13. Is the essay free from misinformation or disinformation?
14. Does the summation follow this pattern:
a) Reword your conclusion.
b) Remind us of your reasons
c) Relate the significance of the discussion
15. Does the “Relate” portion of the summation address the issue: So why should
people care about something that happened in 2018?
16. Is your essay free from basic “rooky” errors: fragments, comma splices, run on
sentences, apostrophe errors, capitalization errors?
Putting it all together Writing the argument
English 101 is a prerequisite for English 102. It is assumed that students who have passed English 101 are comfortable writing academic arguments (arguments with a specific form and function); however, it is always good to have a review. Take a look at the PowerPoint for a review of the academic argument form:
Writing the final essay 2023.pptDownload Writing the final essay 2023.ppt
Now watch the video below where I analyze an argumentative essay that addresses the issue: Was Brock Turner’s sentence appropriate? (NOTE: Your issue is not the same issue although they are related. )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhSk_l4WIaoLinks to an external site.
Your final argument should follow the outline below:
I. The Introduction should
–Get the reader’s attention and engender his/her sympathies
–Provide context for the argument and/or define key terms
–Present the conclusion and blueprint the reasons of the argument. (Do not put the counterargument in your thesis).
2. The Body Paragraphs
–Are organized around reasons. Each paragraph develops one reason; the reason is the discussion point.
–Are developed using the S-E-E pattern or the P-I-E-D
–Properly quote or paraphrase all evidence
–May represent the counterargument using the P-I-E-D pattern of development.
III. The Summation
— Reword the conclusion
— Remind us of the reasons
— Relate the so what? Why should we care? (This is where you should address whether or not Persky should be recalled).
Arguments should focus on using relevant, credible, sufficient, and interesting evidence. Your focus in this assignment should be on identifying and collecting the best evidence possible to make your points.
Evaluating ResourcesLinks to an external site.
When you are writing the editorial, you need to consider the three rhetorical appeals.
An Introduction to Ethos, Logos and PathLinks to an external site.
As you are selecting the evidence to use in your essay, think about how to appeal to the author’s emotions (pathos). You will want to do this in the introduction and the summation. You will want to focus on (ethos and logos) in the body of the argument.
Remember an important aspect of ethos is convincing the reader that you are credible, and an important part of establishing credibility is directing the reader to your original sources. As you collect your evidence, remember to record the URLS so that you can hyperlink the information to the original sources.
