Collaborative Care in the Digital Age
Computer records, email, apps, all of these artifacts of what we can call the digital age have replaced written files, personal letters, and health brochures. In health care, Electronic Medical Records (EMR), also known as Electronic Health Records (EHR) are widely used and help centralize patient information.  Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now playing a role in analyzing medical records to discover pathways to health for difficult cases (UPMC, 2021). Issues about patient confidentiality and privacy when their information is centrally held are of concern and debate (Sharma et al., 2018) While ethical considerations continue to be refined, the use of EMR seems here to stay. Another benefit of the digital or electronic age is telehealth.  While once reserved for use in rural areas or for those with limited mobility, during COVID-19 telehealth gained in popularity. Persons with physical illness or psychological difficulties no longer needed to be transported, a process which can exacerbate their problems and also expose them to communicative illnesses in waiting rooms and doctors’ offices. An appointment with a specialist in another city can be scheduled with the ease of an online video call. In fact, the entire collaborative care team, no matter what their geographical location, can be included in one conference call.
The EMR can be of great benefit for a collaborative care team in sharing medical information about patients who present in person or through telehealth. The information in an EMR can be easily shared, and collaborative care strategies can be recorded for the patient within their EMR so that each member of the team, including the mental health professional, is kept up to date on the patient’s treatment and progress.
