I struggled with reading in kindergarten, first grade, and into second grade. Nothing was clicking and I felt frustrated in so many levels. My older sister was reading grade levels above her grade and almost all my friends could wiz through their homework which all required reading and comprehension on some level. My second grade teacher, Mrs Benitez noticed me struggling and asked my mom if I could be tested. I was tested, and diagnosed with dyslexia. From that point forward I have been taught a new way to approach reading with lots of extra work and help from many teachers. I will never be the fastest reader but I have found a way to work with my disability and strive forwrd.
My perseverance and dedication have helped me inside and outside the classroom. It is enabled me to be parts of groups, including lacrosse and hockey, and not only be a participant, but be a leader as I was captain on my hockey team for my high school.
Attending Oakland technical school for Welding has enabled me to use these skills in a work environment. Show me that there are no limitations as to what I can accomplish with hard work and effort.
AS community service is a big part of our family. My dyslexia has shown me what it’s like to be singled out and how compassion for others can change everything.
