Propaganda Image Analysis
For this assignment, you are to select and analyze an image, specifically a piece of 1800-1920s propaganda on the women’s suffrage movement or American expansionism. Be sure to pay attention to such things as word choice, the multiple meanings words and images can have, the symbols in the image. Also, be sure to situate the image into its historical context and, using the piece as evidence, explain what you think the underlying messages in the work are. For instance, what does the work suggest about such things as beauty? loss? freedom? salvation? (if such things are applicable).
Literary and artistic analyses are close readings. These show us something larger and more complex about the texts and about their relationships to things outside themselves. They show us how powerful literary and artistic works can be in transmitting and consolidating our personal and cultural identities. In addition to situating works into their historical context, these types of analyses address something more about the meaning of the text, specifically what you think the underlying messages in the text are.

**Some key advice: 1) Think old-fashioned meme. Cartoonish images made to spread misinformation/fallacies are the sorts of images you are looking for. Look for one that speaks to you. Try to stay away from photographs. Usually, photographs are used more for documentary purposes than propaganda. 2) DO NOT use John Gast’s painting American Progress. 3) while historical context is important to interpretation, the essay is not a history paper.
