Overview
The final project for this course is the creation of a research paper. Students will write a research paper that analyzes primary documents concerning the relationships between Europeans (and later Euro-Americans), and Indigenous Peoples. In the paper, students will describe how European (and later Euro-Americans) and Indigenous Peoples groups influenced each other by selecting one or more specific categories of analysis. Categories of influence might include religion, technology, warfare, food sources, waterways, medicine, politics, gender roles, trade, alliances, treaties, laws, clothing, and food, for example. The final product represents an authentic demonstration of competency because students will engage in in-depth research of primary sources in order to unearth attitudes, perceptions, and interactions among different cultures in this period. These themes will help you to develop significant research and writing skills as you interact with key themes from the course. The project is divided into two milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. The milestones will be submitted in Modules Three and Five, and the final project (research paper) in Module Seven.
Prompt
The arrival of new peoples and cultures in any area can elicit a wide variety of responses and treatments of specific Indigenous Peoples. In the history of colonial settlement and conquest, how did the invasion of a land inhabited by preexisting peoples develop into significant cultural and lifeway changes? Please consider some of the following concepts: forced socioeconomic and Indigenous lifeway changes involving lands, treaties, housing, weaponry, warfare, food sources, waterways, medicines, travel, societal traditions, customs, rituals, and religious belief systems. You will select primary sources and construct a paper by organizing the information in these sources into themes. The end product will be a unique piece of research that reflects the myriad ways in which these apparently opposing groups influenced and shaped each other’s new sense of civilization in the New World. Please review the Additional Final Project Resources section in Modules One and Seven. Please use these resources while working on your final project.
Develop a research paper analyzing primary documents concerning the relationships between Europeans and Native Americans. The research paper will include the following sections:
Research Topic:
You will submit a research topic based on four primary and two scholarly sources.
The selected topic will be presented as an interpretation of the historical interaction between Native Americans and Europeans, then broken down into sub-themes supported by your sources.
You must submit a one-page paper explaining the primary research topic of how the cultures in your sources influenced each other and identifying three sub-themes for investigation. You should expect to continue conducting research as the topic is identified and refined during and after this milestone.
Annotated Bibliography:
You will submit an annotated bibliography that includes at least four primary sources and two scholarly sources.
These primary sources will help to shape your paper topic, so select a series of interesting historical documents and keep an open mind for how these documents will lead you to new conclusions about the groups you are studying.
Scholarly sources and other supplementary material will most likely change or be added later as the final paper takes shape.
Detailed Outline:
You will submit a detailed outline of the final research paper.
The outline should include an introduction with a polished thesis statement, a detailed breakdown of the body of the paper that includes your three subtopics with paragraph introductions, and transitions between paragraphs, key arguments, and supporting evidence including quotes you intend to use from your sources. The outline should also include a conclusion and a bibliography correctly formatted in Turabian style on the final page.
If you have any questions about interpretation, the outline is an ideal place to ask those questions and receive feedback before refining the final draft.
Final Research Paper Project:
You will submit a final research paper that will include:
A primary topic based on the chosen primary materials
Specific examples and sub-themes for analyzing this chosen topic
Turabian-style citations and complete bibliography on a separate page
5–7 pages
At least 4 primary sources and 2 scholarly sources; other sources may be included if they are reliable and cited properly
Milestones
Milestone One: Research Topic and Annotated Bibliography
In Module Three, you will submit your annotated bibliography and research topic as a single document.
Research Topic
The research topic document should be one page (submitted as the first page in the same document as the annotated bibliography). In the first paragraph, explain your overall topic and the peoples you have chosen as your primary focus. In the second paragraph, explain the sub-themes of your topic and include specific examples from your primary sources. This milestone will be graded using the Milestone One Rubric.Feedback should be applied to the final submission.
Annotated Bibliography
The format should be a list of at least four primary sources and two scholarly sources in Turabian style with a roughly 150-word annotation evaluating the authority or background of the author, commenting on the intended audience, and comparing or contrasting the source with another you have cited or explaining how the work illuminates your topic. Your scholarly sources may be books or articles written by historians and will also require Turabian citation format. Although you may use our textbook for your project, it will not count as one of the additional scholarly sources. (Please note: To receive the highest mark under the Research critical element of the rubric, it is recommended to use more than four primary sources and more than two scholarly sources). This milestone will be graded using the Milestone One Rubric.Feedback should be applied to the final submission.
Milestone Two: Detailed Outline
In Module Five, you will submit a detailed outline of your final paper. The outline should include an introduction with a polished thesis statement, a detailed breakdown of the body of the paper, which includes your three sub-topics with paragraph introductions, key arguments, and supporting evidence including quotes you intend to use from your sources. The outline should also include a conclusion and a bibliography correctly formatted in Turabian style on the final page.
If you want advice on new avenues of investigation or the interpretation of specific examples, you may include such questions in your outline. This milestone will receive full points for submission and 0 points for no submission. Feedback should be applied to the final submission.
Final Submission: Research Paper
In Module Seven, you will submit your final submission (research paper). It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the main elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This milestone will be graded using the Final Project Rubric.
What to Submit
Written components of projects must follow these formatting guidelines: double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and Turabian citations. The project should be at least five pages long but no more than seven, excluding a title page and bibliography. The paper must incorporate feedback from the milestones throughout the course while employing Turabian style footnotes and bibliography accurately.
