What you will write:
Tell a story or write a guide that relates to your literacy by choosing one of the following options:
• Option One – Literacy Narrative: Write a story about a person, place, or thing that influenced the way you
speak, read, and/or write (i.e., your literacy). What was the influence? What did you learn from this
influence? How did it change the way you read, write, and/or speak? You are free to write about one influence
or multiple influences. If you choose this option, I encourage you to write descriptively and as creatively as
you wish.
• Option Two – Discourse Community Guide: Pretend that you are introducing a new person to a discourse
community of which you are a part. Write this person a “guide” (a short, informative paper) for becoming a
member of the discourse community. The language should be friendly and welcoming, but mostly
informative.
• To begin the “guide”, describe your first discourse community.

Communities,” which further defines and describes the concept of a discourse community:

3. What specialized vocabulary (lexis) do they need to know to communicate effectively with
discourse community insiders? Be sure to include examples of words or phrases that are specific
to that community.

5. What are the most important genres (types/forms of written documents) community members use
to achieve these goals?
6. Who are the different audiences the discourse community communicates with, and how can they
adjust their writing for these different audiences?
