I am writing about “Body Insecurities and Beauty Standards”.
My main point is that Beauty standards shouldn’t be defined by others like social media and etc. Some people might say being skinny is unhealthy and means that you have anorexia; on the other hand, people say being fat means you don’t take time to take care of yourself. Whatever feels right and whatever makes me feel good and happy should be the answer of the beauty standards.
My personal experience:
I was a little chubby girl when I was young. I loved eating and did not really care about what other said about me but as I enroll to the elementary school, peers made fun of me. They made fun of my outfit saying the pig is wearing a skirt or something. They would make fun of my weight. This was the begining of the phase of the body insecuirites in my life. As I go to middle school, it got worse. They made fun of me for being a chubby girl but want to look pretty. I stressed eat and some how and from some moment, I stopped enjoy eating and would scold myself from not able to control myself with eating. As it got worse, my mental health got wores. My self-esteem did not exisit at all, and would have victim consciousness of me being fat. I tried so many different unhealthy, healthy weightloss joureny but nothing really worked. As I grew up, I always thought about how to be free from feeling insecure from the body and eating habits and tring to fit in to the beauty standards. (I grew up with two cultures: Korea and the States. There are two different kinds of beauty standards not only the face but also the body. People in Korea love having pale skins, skinny body as if it so thin, I might pass out in few seconds, and small cheeks but people in the States love having tanned skins, volumous various types of body (very toned body), and big cheek bones). I took two years gap from the college and got to really take care of myself. Still then, I could not overcome with the insecurities. With all the medical and unhealthy ways, I finally had made to the skinny body as I wanted but it was different from what I’ve imagine. I still craved for skinny body and was not satisfied. I worked as a model for a while at home but still was full of insecurities.
How has this project informed who we are as thinkers and makers?
· How can the discoveries we have made over the course of the semester be applied to the way we think of – and portray – ourselves as artists and designers?
· Where will we take our research in the context of our Senior Theses?
· How might we use our Research Presentations in the future? How could they be adjusted and developed for professional venues?
