Curate a Virtual Exhibition
Objective:
Curate a Virtual Exhibit on Google Sites. You will need an Exhibition theme (title and statement), 3 Collections (Statements), and 6 artworks for each collection (18 total) each with a label and a short description.
Student Learning Outcomes Targeted
Engage in critical analysis of the visual arts.
Demonstrate and use a fundamental vocabulary required for the evaluation and description of art.
Form aesthetic judgment.
Engage in processes related to the field of art, such as artmaking, critique, exhibition, and curating.
Directions:
Create a Google Site for your virtual exhibition (Watch demo video)
EXHIBITION TITLE and STATEMENT
Decide on a cohesive theme for your Exhibition that all of the artworks will in some way connect to (This could be something like “women in art”, “art about the environment”, or something as silly as “cats in art”). You will also need an Exhibition Title, try to be creative with this.
Write a Short (200-250 word) Exhibition Statement about the exhibition. Insert under exhibition title. Your exhibition statement needs to explain what we will see in the exhibit and how your 3 collections work cohesively to embody your theme.
This should extend beyond “All are modern art”, “All end in -ism”, etc… you should be able to talk about WHY you made the selections you did, what thought process went into selecting these three movements and the work you included from them. Do all the collections focus on female artists? DO they all use the same color palette? Are all the works in response to war? etc…
COLLECTIONS (3)
Select a minimum of three (3)  Art Movements/Periods that we have discussed during the Art History unit (Modules 6-8) for your exhibition. These will be your 3 collections. Try to think of how the collections and/or the artworks will work together to embody your exhibition theme. Research each of your selected collections and determine which 6 (or more) artworks you want to include for each collection. Please note than the 6 artworks selected for each collection must come from that period in art history. For example if you select Cubism for one of your collections the 6 artworks need to be created by an artist who practiced or belonged to that movement during its reign (Cubism for example lasts from 1907-1914 so an artwork from 2006 would not work for this collection), the artwork cannot simply resemble the artwork from Cubism. All artwork has in some way been inspired by what has came before it but that does not mean it comes from that particular time in Art History.
Write three short (100-150 word each) statements about each collection and the artwork you chose to include. Relate the collection back to your Exhibition theme. Insert above each collection.
ARTWORKS (6 for each collection, 18 total for exhibition)
Find high-quality images for each artwork (if you can’t find a good image, pick something else!)
For each artwork, include the artist, title, date, media, and short description (1-2 sentences) to tell the viewer about the subject matterand why the artwork works for this exhibition.  For example:
Frida Kahlo
Little Deer
Oil on Canvas
1946
This painting depicts the face of Frida on a deer that has been shot with many arrows. In it, she expresses her pain and sense of betrayal from her own body, as well as from the world. Through this image of distorted reality, she expresses her physical and emotional pain and suffering.
Repeat for ALL 18 images.
Tip: When writing about the pieces please do not speak in first person, (Avoid I, me, I think, myself, and other first person language). Think about how a major museum would present their collections online.
Turn it in!
Once done with your website you will need to make sure the site is PUBLISHED. the PUBLISH button will be in the top right hand side of your website. Please note if you make edits to you website after publishing the site you will nee to publish it again or the edits will not save. Think about it like a video game, if you do not save after you play, your progress will be lost.
Make sure that you have changed “restricted” access to “anyone with the link” access in the sharing settings (watch video tutorial for clarification)
Copy the correct link, you should see a little I con that looks like this (-) in the top right corner, that is where you will be able to copy your correct link.
Back on the project submission, click the “write submission” option
Use the drop down menu to insert a link, it will be the icon with the little chain symbol
It will ask you how you want to “open the link…” and you will select “New Window”
Paste your link in the URL bar of the insert link page and upload.
Grading Criteria:
Your project will be graded on the quality of your exhibition, your images, and collection coherence. You will also be graded on meeting the minimum expectations for each aspect of the assignment, including the statements, information, and virtual experiences.
Points will also be deducted for poor grammar, spelling, and unclear writing, as well as for poor organization
Please review the provided rubric before submitting your project
