Task
Content Guidelines
The intention of this article critique is not to provide a summary of the material. The critique analyzes and evaluates the work with the goal of personal and professional application. Review the questions below before reading the article, keeping the questions in mind as you read and making notes to assist you in writing the critique.
It will be helpful to read pages 60-61 in your textbook regarding Evaluating Nutrition Information and consider them as you write the article critique. Address the elements below as appropriate to your article:
Identifying the purpose
What is the thesis or focus of this article?
What is the author’s intent in writing this article?
What does this article seek to add that is new on this topic?
Who is the audience for this article?
Considering the source
What do you know about the journal or site publishing this article? Is there an academic focus? Is it geared to a specific audience?
Who is/are the author(s)? What information indicates that they have expertise on the topic? What are their relevant credentials and affiliations?
Do the authors include academic references and cite them in the article? Include any impressions you have of these sources.
Considering methodology and content
Write about the source of information the author(s) used for this article. Did the author(s) perform research, or did they look at a review of research done by others? If research was not conducted, what is the source of information on the topic (such as a literature review or the author’s expertise)?
What gaps or questions remain on this topic after reading this article? If the author is reporting on research they completed, what limitations does the author note that should be considered when interpreting the data (if any)?
Are there alternative ways to provide a counterargument to the author’s point? Does the author show awareness of alternative thinking related to the topic?
