Introduction
Paragraph 1: Introduce the topic area. What is your topic area? What about your topic area specifically?
What is the specific gap in the literature you may have found?
Example: In the wake of Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation to the US Supreme Court,
there is renewed speculation about the future of Roe v. Wade. Indeed, only two years prior,
Justice Kavanaugh’s contentious appointment saw an outpouring of abortion-related legislation
that intended to either restrict or uphold access to abortion. Legal scholars posit that with a then
5-4 conservative majority in the Supreme Court, abortion legislation motioned in 2019 was in
anticipation of action against Roe. With Justice Coney Barrett’s confirmation, the ideological
balance of the Supreme Court shifted further resulting in the most ideologically conservative
court in 50 years, and higher likelihood of action against the very case that legalized abortion
nationwide.
Paragraph 2: Introduce your Central Thesis (Your research question). Tell me the outline of the paper
(i.e. problem/cause/solution). What do you want me to gain from this paper? (By the end of this paper,
what do you want me to learn?
Example: The purpose of this paper is to explore the future of reproductive health in the United States
amid a conservative US Supreme Court. To do so, I will use a problem, cause, and solution format. The
problem section will highlight the underlying issues associated with an unbalanced Supreme Court. In the
causes section, I will talk the factors that contributed to gaining an unbalanced Supreme Court. In the
Solution section, I will discuss possible solutions that can solve this problem. The aim of this paper is for
readers to learn more about abortion legality and framing of these laws and how an unbalanced
supreme court may affect reproductive care broadly.
Prevalence: This section talks about the extent of a problem. For example, what are current rates
within the general population and within a specific population. How long has the issue been
prevalent? Is it getting better or worse over time?
Paragraph 1. Lead in sentence. List two points you will be discussing related to the underlying
prevalence associated with your topic. Discuss the first point by summarizing important literature about
this point. This paragraph will be about 7-10 sentences.
Paragraph 2. This paragraph will be dedicated to the second point listed in the preceding paragraph. In
my example, this paragraph will summarize literature a second point related to the prevalence of a
problem. This paragraph will be 7-10 sentences.
Example. Second, an unbalanced Supreme Court is rarely representative of the peoples’ ideological
beliefs.
Outcomes. The previous section of your paper discussed literature related to the prevalence of a
problem (i.e., Monkey pox infection rates over time); this section of the paper will discuss research-
identified outcomes associated with the problem. . (3-5 Citations)

Solution. This section of the paper will discuss the solutions (again, research identified) of your area of
work. These solutions should NOT be your opinion. For example, What does group X believe the
solutions is? What does Group Y believe the solution is? Are they similar, or different? And How? Like
the preceding section, there are two paragraphs, each focusing on one specific point(3-5 citations)

Tips and Tricks.
Try free-writing each paragraph for 30 minutes (i.e. write without editing, limit backspace)
Create a mind-map using the background, application, implication format as the first three
nodes extending from your research question.
Do the introduction LAST! Once your story is on paper, it’s much easier to go back and craft an
intro
Pull in your summaries from the annotated bibliography. Believe it or not, you have a LOT of
information already written.
