In this assignment you will graphically plot the yeast population data to determine the growth rate and maximum population of each culture by using A-600 as a proxy for the yeast population. Plotting the data is readily accomplished in Excel. It is best to use an X-Y scatter chart type. Time is plotted on the X-axis and A-600 is plotted on the Y-axis, which should be formatted as a logarithmic scale. (You can toggle “logarithmic scale” on and off to see why plotting the logarithm gives a straight line.) If you can’t figure out how to do this on your own there are many video tutorials available online (Google query: excel scatter plot logarithmic scale).
Plot the data: Prepare the plot as described above. Make sure the Y-axis is in logarithmic scale. Label the axes and provide a legend for the curves so the experimental results can be interpreted directly from the figure.
Describe Results: This section should describe in words the results of the virtual experiment. It is not acceptable to simply state that the results are shown in the figure. The answer should be approximately one (1) page in length.
Interpolate the Growth Rates: What are the relative growth rates (expressed as generation time in minutes) of the four growth curves?
Determine the Maximum Extent of Growth: What are the maximum populations obtained by each culture (expressed as relative final A600)? For questions 3 and 4, the answers should specifically reference the data presented in the data plot. The answers to questions 3 and 4 should take approximately one page.
Discussion: This section should state the interpretation of results and corresponding conclusions, being approximately one page (1) in length (double-spaced). How do the results support the hypothesis? What are the broad implications of your experiment for a brewer to consider? Please provide a brief summary statement (1-2 sentences) of your results and conclusions.
1.  Plot Data in Excel (20%)
Label plot and provide figure legend (10%)
Describe results in words (20%)
Calculate growth rates (10%)
Determine maximum extent of growth (10%)
Discuss interpretation of results and conclusions (20%)
Provide summary statement (10%)
