This module has included an overview of society, politics (foreign and domestic), and the economy during the Early Republic as well as some of the major reform efforts that occurred during the 19th century in an attempt to better both the people and the United States. At this time of growth and change, however, there were fundamental issues that faced both the people and the country and ultimately set the path toward division and the Civil War.
How were the political debates of ratification (the Constitution) and of the 1790s still playing out during the early 19th century?
What important changes in context and content occurred in U.S./Native policy from 1789 – 1830s? And what was the relationship between the defeat of the Native Nations east of the Mississippi River and the expansion of slavery? Did the territorial expansion of the United States require the removal of the Native peoples (Explain your answer)?
What were some of the motivations for those involved in and the causes established during the early reform movements? In what ways do these reforms reflect some of the major changes and problems occurring within and throughout the United States?
