With lessons from the tale of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in mind, many of the events we have been experiencing/witnessing lately point towards the possibility of significant adjustments in our environment – and the level of threat to our survivability all that entails. Paleoclimate records and archeological records show that significant climatic changes did occur in the past. The effects include extensive shifts in weather patterns, fundamental changes to ecosystems and landscapes, and by extension the progress of human history.
In the face of the climate crisis, what facts we understand and accept will dictate the shape of our response. Knowledge-driven actions, informed by historical insights, will be the overriding factor between steering or drifting through the crises. Today, many countries, communities and indeed individuals are behaving like a deer caught in the headlights. Many seek “alternative truths” to fit their worldview and help them cope with unprecedented change. But others seem to be more resilient, and acted swiftly, objectively, and proportionally in response to the crisis.
On reflecting on the above statement, first, read the article: Thousands of scientists warn climate tipping points ‘imminent’. Then, discuss why you were initially attracted to your design area? How such news items, like the one above, are changing/not changing your worldview as a designer? What do you think designers ought to do to be effective with environmental mitigation/coping efforts? Specifically, discuss how these events are shaping how you are viewing your progress and development as a designer.
