This week’s readings describe the role of networks in the digital world and organizations. The LinkedIn case study explores the value proposition for a firm to provide organizational members the ability to primarily leverage their external networks via an online platform. In contrast, Leonardi & Contractor (2018) explains how interactions on intra-organizational digital platforms can be leveraged to find out who has good ideas, who is influential, what teams will get work done on time, and more.
Based on the LinkedIn case study and the Leonardi & Contractor (2018) article, please answer one or both of the following prompts:
1. How should LinkedIn leverage the data they collect on their platform to offer people analytic insights to their users and/or to organizations whose members belong to LinkedIn? Which specific services do you think you and/or your organization would consider using if they were made available by LinkedIn? What concerns might you have about using these services?
2. How should organizations leverage the digital trace data from their internal social media platforms (e.g. Slack, Teams, Zoom) to offer people analytic insights to individuals and/or to organizations? Which specific services do you think you and/or your organization would consider using if they were made available based on the digital trace data from these internal social media platforms? What concerns might you have about using these services?
