“Being the Light”
Read Ephesians 5:1-20 and Philippians 2:12-18.
We often talk about our past as “walking in” darkness and our present as “walking in” the light. Ephesians 5:8 does not actually describe it that way.
This passage says we were the darkness. Darkness is the absence of light and the absence of colors. Darkness isn’t something: it’s nothing. There is a difference between being in the darkness and being the source of darkness, just like there is a difference between walking into a dark room and being a black hole.
But now we are the light. We are not in the light; we are the source of light within which is contained every color. So be colorful and “shine like stars” (Philippians 2:15).
In your response, address the following:
How is the concept of “being the light” in all ways different than the idea of “shedding light” on everything?
What are the ways that one can show love to others, even when we don’t agree?
