Introduction – This should be about a page. This is NOT a place where you just ramble about useless information that does not pertain to your topic. Students tend to throw in whatever here, and this is how you will quickly lose a lot of points. Discuss some background information surrounding your topic. This is where you can talk about the history behind your topic and what is current. Whatever you discuss here, you want it to be relevant so you can tie it into your topic.
Aims—This should be about a paragraph, no more than two. It has some similarities to an abstract in a peer-reviewed study but slightly different. You basically take the entire paper and combine it into one paragraph. Briefly provide a little bit of info surrounding the topic, why it is important, what your goals are, and what your hypothesis is.
Research – This should be about a page. This is the easiest section. This section is very bland and dry. It is straight to the point with no sugar. You want to tell the reader how the study was done. Is it an animal study, a double-blind placebo-controlled study, how many participants, what dosage was given, and what tests were run? Do NOT provide results in this section; save that for the RESULTS section of your paper so you hit the page number.
Ex. The double-blind placebo-controlled study by Mallory et al. evaluated the effects of Duloxetine on 234 patients with depression. Patients were given one of three tablets: 40 mg, 60 mg, or placebo. The various metrics used were blood pressure, serum testing, nerve pain testing, and an improvement of life questionnaire (Mallory et al., 2060).
Results – This should be about a page. This is where you include the data. This is also where you can include graphs or charts from the study. This is where you can say “of the 234 patients in Mallory et al., 63% showed improvements with Duloxetine, whereas 37% showed no improvements (Mallory et al., 2060).” Perhaps you share the most effective dosage and the data from the study to support it.
Discussion – this should be about a page to a page and a half. This is where you tie it all together and make connections from your results section. Perhaps you looked into many different drugs used to treat depression. This is where you connect the dots. Why was one study better than the other? What were limitations of the study? This is where you extrapolate from the information by making bigger and broader connections with research to back it up (does not have to come from the studies used in your results section). Using my Duloxetine examples for depression, perhaps based on the evidence I presented in my paper, I make a connection to fibromyalgia. At the end of your discussion is where you can write a paragraph or two stating your conclusion. What you found, and whether your hypothesis was correct or incorrect.
EX: “Mallory et al. showed a greater improvement when using drug X compared to Edward et al., which used drug Y (Mallory et al., 2060; Edward et al., 2070). It is likely that Mallory et al. showed greater results from using drug X because other studies did not account for nerve pain testing. Based on the evidence from Mallory et al., it is possible that Duloxetine can be used for more issues, such as fibromyalgia (Mallory et al., 2060). This is supported by Ruth et al., which states that nerve pain is a contributor to fibromyalgia, and was noted by Mallory et al., that participants had a 75% improvement in nerve pain (Ruth et al., 2080; Mallory et al., 2060).”
