The Mongols were a group of individuals that arose an empire in the Mongolian territory that would go on to forever leave its mark on the world. The rise of the Mongols during the thirteenth century would changed many things in the world, including intercontinental trade, the birth of new empires, impacts on religion, and would change the course of history forever. Timothy May gives a great descriiption of the rise of the Mongols and how it was a slow and taxing process, with many steps taking place in order for it to build into what it is known as today. May talks about how the Mongol army was a very strong army that looked to expands its territory to beyond its reach. The Mongols expanded throughout Central Asia, thanks to the great leadership of Chimggis Khan: “The army that Chinggis Khan organized was the key to Mongol expansion. It fought and operated in a fashion that other medieval armies did not, or could not, replicate. In essence it operated very much as a modern army does, over multiple fronts and in several corps but in a coordinated effort. Also, the Mongols fought in the manner of total war. The only result that mattered was the defeat of enemies through any means necessary, including ruses and trickery” (May). Thanks to the the strong army the Mongols had, May goes on to talk about how this allowed for their empire to have a major impact the geography, trade, and religion of the world. Frankopan talks about the Mongol dynasty in a way similar to that of May, but he puts more stress on the power and fear that the Mongolian people had. Frankopan talks about how the Mongols seemed to be a crazy tribe by outsiders, but I. Reality they were great planners. This planning, and fear that they instilled in others, allowed or the, to establish on of the worlds biggest empires. The sheer scale of the Mongolian empire was allowed because of the violence in which they enacted on to others. Frankopan really focuses on this aspect of the Mongolian dynasty.
