How have other countries set restraints to their governments?

June 8, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

The Constitution of the United States created a strong but limited national government, in order to protect the citizens from possible abuses of the government. These limits are expressed, in the division of its powers, the adoption of a federal system, the proclamation of civil liberties and rights, and the rotation and selection of authorities through popular election. How have other countries set restraints to their governments? Are these solutions preferable to the ones implemented in the United States? For your paper, answer these questions by comparing the United States with one or two other countries addressing one dimension of government. Specifically, your paper should 1) describe the dimension of government you are addressing (e.g., relationships between branches or levels of government, processes of selection of authorities, rights of the citizens and how they are protected, etc.), 2) describe the limits implemented in each country, and 3) critically analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these limits and the conditions that may explain their success or failure.Paper RubricPaper RubricCriteriaRatingsPtsThis criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeWords countThe post should be 250-300 words long–part of the challenge is to express ideas in a narrow space.10 to >9.0 ptsWithin the word limitsDo not include the title of the paper or the bibliography in the word count9 to >1.0 pts1 to 99 words above the word limitDo not include the title of the paper or the bibliography in the word count1 to >0 pts100 words above the limitDo not include the title of the paper or the bibliography in the word count10 ptsThis criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeAddressing the PromptThe paper addresses the main question and the requirements posed in the prompt.10 to >8.0 ptsDirect and clear answerThe answer provided addresses the prompt clearly and directly.8 to >2.0 ptsIndirect or UnclearThe answer addresses the prompt only partially, or the arguments are not fully clear.2 to >0 ptsNot direct or clearThe answer provided does not address the prompt clearly and directly.10 ptsThis criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeCentral ArgumentThe paper has a clear central argument (or questions) that structures the whole piece.20 to >15.0 ptsHas a Central Argument (or question)The paper expresses a central argument (or question) and the rest of the text is clearly designed to support that argument (or answer that question)15 to >10.0 ptsArgument (or question) is unclear but still identifiableThe paper does not express clearly a central argument (or question), but the reader can still identify a central proposition throughout the text.10 to >5.0 ptsArgument (or question) expressed but not followedThe paper expresses a clear and distinct central argument, but it is not followed through the text.5 to >0 ptsNo central argumentThe paper has not a clear central argument (or question) and there is no clear line or argumentation.20 ptsThis criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeArgumentProvide factual examples and/or referred theoretical arguments that support the paper’s main argument20 to >15.0 ptsAdequate examples and/or referred argumentsExamples and/or referred theoretical arguments support the paper’s main argument compellingly15 to >5.0 ptsPartial support of examples and/or referred argumentsExamples and/or referred theoretical arguments are either flawed or partially unrelated to the paper’s main argument5 to >0 ptsineffective examples and/or referred argumentsThe paper does not provide examples or referred theoretical arguments, or they don’t support the argument of the main argument.20 ptsThis criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeUnderstanding of the contents of the classThe paper shows good handling of key concepts and explanations reviewed in this class.20 to >15.0 ptsComprehension and propper useThe paper shows a good understanding of the material addressed in the readings and lectures of the class (including concepts and explanations), and use it adequately in arguments and/or opinions15 to >5.0 ptsComprehension but inadequate useThe paper shows a good understanding of the material addressed in the readings and lectures of the class (including concepts and explanations) but fail to use it adequately in arguments and/or opinions5 to >0 ptsLack comprehensionThe paper fails to show a good understanding of the material addressed in the readings and lectures of the class (including concepts and explanations)20 ptsThis criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeUse of bibliographyThe arguments and/or examples are appropriately supported by academic sources15 to >10.0 ptsArguments and examples sufficiently supportedAll the arguments and examples are supported with enough academic sources.
