*** You will reply to 2 classmates’ threads. At least 1 paragraph in length. They must be on the same page, but LABELED WHO’s is WHOSE. The first paragraph should be labeled (Caitlin Bastian) and the other one should be labeled (Joy Thomas) ****** You comment on the applicability of the scientific method for the situation they proposed. Suggest at least one way they might refine their design for better results.
Joy Thomas
Hello everyone, my name is Joy and I live in NYC. I am seeking a Masters in Psychology with a con. in Child and Developmental Psychology with clear intent in obtaining licensure in this role. This is my first course with SNHU. I have a BS in Community and Human Service with a concentration in Child and Family Studies. My career goal is to continue working in the Dept. of Education as a School Psychologist on the master’s level as an IEP team member. I want to continue building relationships with students and families of all cultural backgrounds on a different educational level.
Having an interest in helping students while advocating for individual student success in a safe environment. Teaming with parents and other school professionals to promote growth in all areas of growth. Building relationships as a school psychologist all while interacting with students caring about their personal lives, goals, listening to their problems and sharing personal time with them. This will allow feeling safe, accepted and welcome every time development academically and personally is extremely comfortable.
Question: How effective can positive behavioral support (PBS) which teaches functional skills to replace challenging behaviors be?
Research: The purpose of challenging behaviors using an ABC checklist, teaching functional skills as an alternative response that serves the same purpose as the challenging behavior. Consistently rewarding positive behaviors and minimizing the rewards for challenging behavior, and minimizing environmental, and curricular elements that trigger challenging behavior. Experiment: Demonstrating positive behavioral support strategies include changing classroom environment, allowing predictability and scheduling daily, giving choice making, adjusting the curriculum, teaching replacement skills, and appreciating positive behaviors.
Caitlin Bastian
My name is Caitlin Bastian, and I am pursuing a Master’s in Psychology with a concentration in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. I currently work for a non-profit organization that provides career resources and resume assistance to members of the military community and am eager to leverage my degree to improve upon our current practices and further fulfill our mission.
My husband and I are a part of a running club at our local brewery, and we meet once a week to complete a 5K. We are actively trying to incorporate running into our daily lives so we can improve our 5K times, but it can be difficult to make the time for a mile a day. I am fortunate enough to work remotely and my schedule is fairly flexible, but I live in Florida so it’s not always practical to run in the middle of the day due to the heat. For this discussion, I’d like to focus on identifying the best time to run each day.
Question: Is it better to run a mile in the morning or in the evening?
Research: I would research the benefits of running at various points of the day, for instance would it make me feel more energized or help me sleep better to choose a specific time? Additionally, I would consider the weather for the week to see if it is hotter/colder than usual, if the humidity will change day to day, or if afternoon showers are forecasted. I would then look at my past habits to identify any trends before making my hypothesis — do I tend to have more motivation to run before work, or do I prefer evening runs?
Hypothesis: If I run a mile in the morning before work, then I will feel more energized throughout the day.
Experiment: This would take place over a two-week period. The first week would consist of me running in the morning before work (around 6:30 or 7:00 AM), while the second would have me running in the evening (around 5:30 or 6:00 PM).
Analyze Data: I would initially look at each week individually to see how many days I ran and the following impact (i.e., energized, sleepy, etc.). From there, I would compare each week to see which had the most run days as well as identify potential time trends.
Conclusion: If the data supported my hypothesis, I would more than likely stick to that schedule and incorporate it into my daily routine. If my hypothesis was not supported, I would make adjustments and continue testing.
