Module 2 Discussion Assignment: Sensation and Perception
Purpose:
To explore and discuss concepts related to sensation and perception and contemplate the existence of extrasensory perception (ESP).
Discussion Board Prompt (Meets Module Objective 3 & 4):
Our impressive sensory abilities allow us to experience the most enjoyable and most miserable experiences, as well as everything in between. Our eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin provide an interface for the brain to interact with the world around us.
Using your textbook and 1 additional credible resource, answer the following:
1. How does sensation affect what you are experiencing right now? Choose one sensory modality (ie. vision, hearing, taste, etc…) and describe the anatomical structures and processes in how it functions. Which of the senses do you think is the most complex and why?
2. How does perception affect what you are experiencing right now? Describe at least one common perceptual illusion and explain the causes.
3. Is extrasensory perception (ESP) real? In other words, can perception occur without our five senses? What is the evidence for and against ESP? Using both your textbook and at least 1 other source, examine both sides of this phenomenon.
