Part II: Response to reading. Answer the following questions about this unit’s readings. Be sure to answer questions thoroughly and use complete sentences. This section is worth 30 points.
1. “New Last Words for My Mother” by Lu Vickers– 15 points
A. Vickers writes, “I imagine my father before he was my father, smiling at my mother before she was my mother.” We often think of our parents as our parents, not as individuals with lives beyond their connections to us. Consider someone important to you and describe him/her objectively, with an identity separate from your relationship, as if you were observing from a distance.
B. This nonfiction narrative describes some harsh family interactions. However, this essay also includes powerful images of circles, clothing, nature, and color that balance the pain of reality. Write out two descriptions that you find particularly memorable and explain the symbolism or significance of each description.
2. “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King, Jr. – 15 points
A. How does Martin Luther King, Jr., create an appeal to pathos, the emotions of the audience? Cite examples of what you consider the most effective instances of that appeal.
B. What types of evidence does King use in his argument? Cite examples.
C. Are there places in the letter where the argument seems to be more oral than written, places where you can hear the words? Provide some examples.
