When Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected in 1932, the United States stood at a dangerous precipice. The Great Depression, which began in 1929, had not abated by the time of the election of 1932. FDR was elected on the promise of changing the course of the country towards a future of stability and prosperity. After his inauguration in 1933, FDR began a long journey of structural change of government and business in the United States. Many of his proposals were controversial and met with considerable political resistance.
While FDR could count on his party for support, he also wanted to ‘take things public’, but getting the general population on board with his policies. To achieve this, he utilized the new technology of radio to interact directly and meaningfully with the listening population of the United States.
These “Fireside Chats”, as they would come to be known, allowed FDR a level of interaction that no US President had previously had. I allowed him to interact with the public directly, with his own voice and ideas, with the intent of informing the public of his activities, helping them understand the policies, and encouraging them to support him.
