How do these pieces apply to society and/or culture at large?

June 24, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

C‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍hoose three pieces of literature that we have read this semester. Of the three pieces of literature that were selected, please write a 1000 word essay (4 pp. double-spaced, 12 font, Times New Roman) focusing on analyzing the following three areas for each piece (these are the larger ball park areas to consider, and the questions further down stem from them and are a bit more specific). Feel free to integrate any other areas we have covered over the semester such as dialogue, character, setting, and so forth. For our purposes here, “imagery” is an umbrella term (see previous uploads wherein I explain it in depth) indicating a visual that is created in the reader’s mind and can be either concrete or abstract. A metaphor is a type of image and your assigned readings have been full of them. For example, in Joyce’s story, “Araby,” the narrator tells us that “the soft rope of her hair tossed from side to side.” Now the character’s hair isn’t actually rope; however, it behaves as such in its movement. It is also an image; however, the term “image” is an umbrella term that has its own sub-divisions and categories. Referring to the term “image” as an “umbrella” term is in fact a metapho! But this is all in what I’ve already uploaded for you, so look through your content for further assistance. Also, previous uploaded prompts may also help you with this assignment. ? Imagery & Symbolism ? Metaphor(s) ? “Truth” (the message, moral, and/or lesson) For each area (bullet), state a question that is related to it, and then answer it as fully and thoughtfully as you can. You may use the questions listed down below, or you can create your own questions. It’s best, however, to address some of the questions below, and it’s up to you whether you want to add more of your own. It would h‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍elp to review the numerous items and files I have posted over the semester regarding literature and language, such as “Helpful information” and “Helpful Terms” etc. If after this, you don’t have the four pages, then continue with answering more of the questions below–that you did not answer for your initial three. And it will be up to you which of the stories you want to continue discussing at that point. That is 1,000 word TOTAL, not 1,000 for each one. You can breathe a sigh of relief! No, it’s not 3,000; it’s 1,000, which is about 4 pp. double-spaced. Not too terrible. You should try to divide it into even thirds for each work. It’s understandable, however, to do a little more for a work you feel more knowledgeable about, but please attempt to give adequate attention to each one. Please attempt to address and/or answer as many of the following brainstorming questions as possible: ? What is the “point” (or “truth”/message/moral/lesson) of each piece of literature? ? How do these pieces apply to society and/or culture at large? ? What societal and/or cultural climate /historical context caused these pieces to be written? ? Which of these pieces are still relevant today? Why? ? How do these pieces apply to the individual? Explain. ? How are imagery, metaphor, and symbolism used to further the message/lesson? ? By removing images & symbols, are the lessons any different? Please review and refer to all the appropriate items that I have uploaded throughout the semester, and attempt to synthesize original opinions and analysis while answering these questions. Last but not least, don’t forget to review the uploads on critical thinking, as critical thinking is integral to our learning objectives. We must analyze, interpret, and evaluate the works in order to develop sound insights and an effect‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ive analysis.
