How do these expectations or realities influence who you are today?

October 9, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

In each module you will practice the skills you are building in an essay assignment. Your first major essay assignment for this course is your identity narrative. In this assignment you will practice narrative writing using sensory detail, while also discovering and exploring what defines you. You will write to share that discovery with others.
This assignment should take you approximately 3 hours to complete.
Instructions
Main Idea: The theory of narrative identity explores the idea that people form their identities by creating ever-evolving stories from their life events and their interpretation of those events. This story helps give them purpose and helps them form a vision of their futures. For this assignment, you will explore what defines you as a person, as a member of a group, or as a college student.
Brainstorm: Think about some of the identity groups to which you belong. You might consider your membership in regards to gender, race, culture, religion, socioeconomic status, special needs, sports, clubs, subcultures, outward appearance, or other defining characteristics that matter to you. In your essay, you will explore how your membership in one of these groups influences your identity as a student or as a person.
Pre-Write: Consider expectations others have of you because of your membership in this group. Consider expectations you have of yourself because of your membership in this group. How do these expectations or realities influence who you are today?
Write: Create a thesis statement that shows your reader how your group membership influenced or influences your identity. As support for your thesis, tell the story of at least one important moment in your life that shows how your identity was influenced by your membership in this group. Reflect on this moment to show your reader why it was significant.
Your essay length should be 750—800 words.
You should not use any sources for this assignment.
Be sure to use MLA Style to format this assignment. Apply MLA Style to all aspects of the paper, including the heading, title page, proper paragraph indentation and spacing, font, margins, size, etc.
Please talk about me being gay, black male and living in the united states. Also talk about how capitalism affects these groups.
