Historical Trauma and California Indian Experiences
Review the material below before completing A3:
[ 1 ] Bridges: Post-Secularization, 1836-1900
This is a chapter by Deborah Miranda (Esselen/Chumash) from her          book Bad Indians: A Tribal Memoir by Deborah Miranda.  She provides a   creative and unique approach to writing about California Indian history, especially from the perspective as California Indian woman and scholar.  The chapter reflects her knowledge and perspective on the experiences  of California Indians around the time of the gold rush.
[ 2 ] Kelsey Was His NameLinks to an external site.
This audio file was created by a former student, Sheeyay Duncan (Pomo), who interviewed his grandmother (Mildred Duncan) for a project in an     Ethnic Studies course.  The interview included a discussion of the Bloody  Island massacreLinks to an external site. in 1850, one of many that             occurred throughout California around the time of the Gold Rush.             Although this massacre occurred decades before Mildred Duncan was  born, this audio reveals the significance of historical trauma as you can  hear the pain in her voice when she speaking about this horrific event in  the history of Pomo Indians.
[ 3 ] Office of the Governor, Gavin Newsom: Press Release and Executive          Order.
On June 19, 2019, Governor Newsom issued a formal apology to Native     peoples of California for the genocide they experienced and issued an    Executive Order establishing the Truth and Healing CouncilLinks to an       external site. in the Governor’s Office of Tribal Affairs for the State of         California.
Oral traditions and testimonials play an important role in understanding or    engaging history. and they reveal important aspects of history, especially      when it comes to confronting problems or aspects of Native histories and       cultures.  For the purposes of this assignment consider “Bridges” by Deborah Miranda (Esselen/Chumash) and “Kelsey Was His Name” with Mildred Duncan (Pomo) to testimonials by California Indian women.
Use the following questions to help you in framing a critical response based  on the sources for this assignment:
What do we learn about California Indian history from the testimonial by Deborah Miranda?  From Mildred Duncan?  Where aspects of their              testimonials included in history courses you have taken previously (high school, college, etc.)?
Are Governor Newsome’s apology and the establishment of the Truth  and Healing Council positive steps forward?  Why or why not?
Be sure to give your response a title.  A good title communicates a      main point or idea.
Your paper should have a minimum of four citations.  When quoting or referring to main points or themes in the readings you can include       author and page number (Miranda, page 55).  When quoting or            referring to an important idea from a video or audio file you can cite in minutes and seconds (Duncan, 1:23 ).
Pay attention to sentence structure and allow time to proofread.
