Evaluate the impact of Said’s Orientalism on subsequent studies of colonialism and gender. Address the following questions in your response and be sure to do the following to support your points: use and cite at least three of the assigned readings (including Said’s Orientalism) and use and cite at least three sections of any part of Tutorial 2.
How did Said’s approach and ideas influence scholarship on colonialism and gender published after Orientalism?
To what extent did Said’s ideas change subsequent studies of colonialism and gender?
What were the cultural and intellectual implications of Said’s Orientalism?
Conclude with the self-reflection (see questions above under “Prompt”).
At the end of your essay, please include the following statement, followed by your initials: “I did not use an AI tool or any other outside sources besides the assigned reading to complete this essay.”
Your essay should have the following …
1) An introduction with a thesis statement that addresses the what/how/why
2) Body paragraphs of supporting evidence and examples from the assigned readings and tutorial that are accompanied by Author-Page citations, i.e., (Said, 1979, 380) or (Said, 1981, 12) or (Schaar, 10).
3) A concluding section (1 or 2 paragraphs) where you answer the following questions: How well did the explanations, readings, videos, and questions in Tutorial 2 (Parts 1, 2, and 3) help you to understand the context in which Edward Said’s Orientalism was written, the ideas presented in the book, and its audience, reception, and impact? What were you clear on, and what were you confused by? How well did the prompts for the Discussion Posts help you to understand particular aspects of Orientalism? Did you read other posts in the Discussion Board? If so, to what extent did reading how others responded to the prompts help you to understand the course material?
Recommended length: 4-5 pages, double-spaced. The length is based on what I believe is sufficient for you to fully address the prompt and all the criteria in the rubric. I do not deduct points for being under or over-the-page recommendations, so there is no need to play with the font size and style, margins, and spacing. Points are based on how well you meet the criteria in the rubric. Please be sure to cite anything you quote, paraphrase, or summarize using parenthetical citations within the text of your essay.
You don’t need to include a Works Cited page, since you must use the materials assigned in the course (readings and Tutorial 2 PPTs).
Rubric: Please review the rubric for Essay 2
