WATCH the news
Plan to watch the news for a complete 30 minutes of local news coverage. You can do this by watching the news on TV. It must be local news – this includes: NY1, CBS2, NBC4, FOX5, ABC7 and News 12, which air local news in the early mornings, noon, afternoon and late night.
If you do not have TV access you could alternatively watch
CBSN-NY (an all day stream of local metro New York news). Click this link to access the streaming source: https://www.cbsnews.com/live/cbsn-local-ny/
Eye Witness News (ABC7) is available streaming on: https://abc7ny.com/abc-live-news-eyewitness-stream-watch-now/11512188/
Pix11 has live stream of news, but at particular times – see the PIX 11 NEWS options (not the NY Living or Evening News): https://pix11.com/live/
Take NOTES
While watching the news, take notes about each story being reported – the notes will be submitted with the reflection, so they must be complete in addressing all of the following:
date and time of when you watched the news
what are the stories about,
how do they seem portrayed / the emotional tone,
which ones get more attention / how long do they last,
how do the anchors transition from one story to the next and,
importantly, who are the various people (think social categories/social status) represented in the stories – does race, age, gender, religion, etc seem to matter?
