Final essay prompt:
Select two eras of Latin American history from the following: Nationalism, Revolution, Reaction and Neoliberalism and Beyond. You will write an essay that explains both the challenges and opportunities within your chosen eras. You are expected to use the Chasteen readings that apply to the era of your choice as the main sources of information. You may use outside resources to develop your essay but just make sure to cite accordingly.
As you write about the challenges and opportunities, you should address the
following questions: How do you define a challenge or an opportunity as it
pertains to Latin America during these historical eras? How did challenges and
opportunities impact the diverse peoples of Latin America? Who received the
most benefits, who experienced the most hardship, and why?
Instructions:
Your essay should be no less than 5 and no greater than 7 pages in length (excluding references).
You will not be penalized for writing a 5-page as opposed to a 7-page essay. I, personally, am more of a concise writer. As my mother says, “no tengo pelos en la lengua” (translation: I do not have hairs on my tongue). In other words, I tend to be more direct in my writing. I am providing a page range so that you can be comfortable with and true to your writing style.
You will be graded on the depth and specificity of your responses. Make sure to cite/paraphrase from the book or other readings to support your analysis.
If you want to include a title page, that is fine. A running head would also suffice. I do not accept essays where the first page has a 3-inch margin with your name, class specifics, etc. Use only 1-inch margins for the body of your essay…no cutting corners please, it’s just not necessary.
12pt font in Times New Roman, double-spaced.
APA format and citation. I do cut points when APA is not followed. In the past, I have had students who do not put the bibliography in alphabetical order, do not follow APA, and I do penalize for those things. So, please do follow APA format. Simple things: Check your spelling. Make sure spelling of authors/references/etc., is correct.
Rubric:
Total Points: 50
Breakdown: Content/Organization: 40 points.
APA format, correct margins, font, spelling, and grammar: 10 points.
