Here we will discuss what we’ve read so far, including the major figures, events, and themes that relate to our Course Learning Outcomes. The parameters for this discussion assignment are as follows:
You must contribute one initial post on one of your choice from the topics below. It must be around 200 words long, and it must address the question with one pertinent citation from the text and one pertinent citation from an outside source (your citations do not apply to the word count), using correct standards for in-text and end-of-text citations. Initial posts from other students are hidden from view until you have submitted your initial post. This will be due one week before the module deadline.
After your initial post, you must choose two posts from your fellow students and reply to them with your thoughts and analysis. One reply should be to an initial post addressing the topic that you chose with a different viewpoint, and the other should be to an initial post that addresses the topic you did not choose. Your replies should be thorough, and not a simple “I agree/I disagree” with no qualifiers. Your reply should be around 100 words long, and appropriately cited if you reference outside materials. All replies should be respectful and courteous, and not a jumping-off point for a political, economic, or social debate. This will be due by the module deadline.
For extra credit, you may submit a third reply to a different initial post on either topic. It should be around 100 words in length, and will also be due by the module deadline.
Here are the topics, remember, choose one to comment on fully, and prepare to reply to posts on both:
It is said that there are many reasons that the Cold War never became a “Hot” (active) war: the reluctance to engage in a destructive ideological war by a generation that lived through World War II, the threat of mutually-assured nuclear destruction, and the many proxy conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Afghanistan, and other places around the world that served the interests of the US and USSR. Which do you think was the most effective, and what were the most-affected areas of a “Cold” war?
As we know, the decolonization process was not easy or without complications. Although there is no real desire to return to European domination, outside of the African Union there has not been much in the way of cooperation between former colonies. None of the “pan” movements: pan-Africanism, pan-Islamism, and pan-Arabism, achieved anything close to their objectives. Why do you think this is?
