Here is the assignment.
What I would like is help to set up framework for the paper. Below is the assignment
from class on page 1 and 2. On page 3 are my initial thoughts
Bottom of Form
The application assignment for DEL 815 (Qualitative
Research) is a 10-12-page paper in which you present an argument for the
qualitative section of a mixed methods research study. Your study may build on
the application assignment completed for DEL 805 (Quantitative Research).
Review the literature provided on social capital and develop your research to
address a question from that literature. Your paper needs to include an
abbreviated Ch 1 (purpose and context for the research), an abbreviated Ch 2 (a
brief narrative about the literature which forms your conceptual framework –
i.e., the key concepts/constructs), and a full Ch 3 (An expanded methods
chapter including your argument for the mixed method research methodology,
design, method, and data analysis as well as procedures for addressing ethical
and rigor issues). Your paper must have the following elements:
Chapter 1
Your
purpose for conducting the research. Include your personal and practical
goals
Contextual
narrative for the proposed research
Your
research question (here also elucidate your intellectual goal)
Chapter 2
Brief
narrative about the key themes from the literature as it relates to your
research
The
key concepts which your research questions studies – your conceptual
framework describing the relationships between those key concepts
(You may choose to include a basic diagram of your
conceptual framework which identifies the concepts and their relationships, but
the diagram does not replace the narrative.)
Chapter 3
Rationale
for the mixed methods* methodology (i.e., the philosophical grounding for
each – qual and quant) *(you are welcome to focus on one primary
methodology)
The
argument and description of the type of mixed methods design for your
research question (Remember to provide your argument for why that is the
optimal design of choice – not simply use the literature to tell us what
that particular design is.)
Describe
the “researcher’s stance”
Describe
how and why you would select your population as well as how you will
solicit and obtain your sample (participants) for the research
Include
specific details on how you would collect your data
Include
specific details on how you plan to analyze the data (e.g., Do not simply
identify a specific statistical test or do not simply say you will use
interpretative coding.)
Address
potential bias and how your data collection and data analysis methods will
minimize that bias.
Speak
to how your study addresses validity and reliability for each of the
qualitative elements. (Remember quantitative and qualitative paradigms
approach determining rigor differently.)
There is no team assignment for the Application. During
class, we will discuss the elements of the paper as a group.
Application Intent: The intent of this research
project is for you to practice designing and proposing a mixed methods research
and defending your choices and to gain experience in research thinking required
with integrating goals, assumptions, methods, strengths, and limitations of
this approach to research including interpretation and presentation of results.
This assignment will contribute to your ability to demonstrate program outcome
#5: “Assess existing research and practices and design, conduct
and interpret research to contribute to the theory and practice of leadership
within one’s discipline and in interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, or
transdisciplinary contexts.” (Refer to the program outcome #5 rubric
at the end of the syllabus for additional description of criteria for this
outcome.) Thus, your application must demonstrate skills in thinking skills
applied to designing, conducting and interpreting qualitative research.
If your application assignment does not address the
assignment’s intent, it will not be graded and will be returned to you for
further development. As you think about or perhaps begin drafting your
application assignment you may want to discuss your approach to the intent of
the assignment to ensure that it is meets the requirements of the assignment.
Here is are my initial thoughts
Research Question: How does mentoring impact the positive
cultural identity development and cultural awareness among African-American
high school males?
Qualitative Design:
Research
Approach: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA)
IPA
allows for an in-depth exploration of individuals’ lived experiences and
perceptions, making it suitable for understanding how mentoring
influences cultural identity development and awareness among
African-American high school males.
Sampling
Strategy: Purposive Sampling
Select
African-American high school males who have participated in mentoring
programs focused on cultural identity development and awareness.
Aim
for diversity in terms of age, socioeconomic background, academic
achievement, and geographic location to capture a range of experiences
and perspectives.
Data
Collection Methods: a. Semi-Structured Interviews:
Conduct
semi-structured interviews with participants to delve into their
experiences, beliefs, and perceptions regarding how mentoring has
influenced their cultural identity development and awareness.
Explore
themes such as cultural pride, self-esteem, self-perception, sense of
belonging, exposure to diverse perspectives, and cultural empowerment. b.
Reflective Journals:
Encourage
participants to keep reflective journals throughout their mentoring
experiences to document their thoughts, feelings, and insights related to
cultural identity and awareness.
Analyze
journal entries to uncover deeper layers of meaning, personal growth, and
transformative experiences.
Data
Analysis:
Use
IPA to analyze interview transcripts and reflective journal entries,
focusing on identifying patterns, themes, and narratives related to
positive cultural identity development and cultural awareness.
Engage
in a detailed and iterative process of coding, categorizing, and
interpreting the data to uncover nuanced insights and understandings.
Ethical
Considerations:
Obtain
informed consent from participants and ensure confidentiality and
anonymity.
Respect
cultural sensitivities and create a culturally sensitive research
environment that values participants’ voices and perspectives.
Acknowledge
power dynamics within mentor-mentee relationships and ensure equitable
representation of voices in the research process.
Validity
and Reliability:
Enhance
validity through member checking and peer debriefing, where participants
review and validate the researcher’s interpretations of their
experiences.
Ensure
reliability by maintaining detailed records of data collection methods,
analysis procedures, and interpretations to enable transparency and
replicability.
Expected
Outcomes:
A
deep understanding of how mentoring contributes to positive cultural
identity development and cultural awareness among African-American high
school males.
Identification
of key factors within mentorship relationships that foster cultural
pride, self-confidence, cultural exploration, and a sense of belonging.
Insights
into the potential impact of mentoring on academic achievement,
resilience, and well-being through the lens of cultural identity and
awareness.
